A couple of friends sent me two articles of interest: The Hidden Costs of Layoffs and Taming Turnover. Both describe some of the costs that are incurred and the intangibles that are lost when an employer uses layoffs in the hopes of making a company more profitable, or when employee retention is poor. For example, knowledge loss, lower productivity, poor employee morale and loyalty, etc.
